Marathon Florida Fishing

Fishing in the State of Florida is excellent most anytime of the year. But Marathon, FL Keys fishing is some of the best in the state. Read along to find some of the best reefs, wrecks and hot spots in this area. With the Atlantic Ocean right off from the dock, it is easy and quick to get to many different fishing grounds up and down the FL Keys off of Marathon.

Fishermen of all skill levels can find something to catch in this dream destination. If you are new to the area and have never fished it before, you may wan to charter a fishing guide or charter boat for the day. There are many fishing reefs in Marathon Key, FL. This fishing town has easy access to the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Florida Bay. Many fish catching possibilities are present just about any day of the year.

Depending upon the season you may catch many different fish species such as:
  • dolphin
  • blackfin tuna
  • yellowfin tuna
  • reef fish
  • wahoo
  • sailfish
  • amberjacks
  • sharks
  • tarpon
Some of the prime areas include:
  • Marathon Hump: 
  • various reefs
  • various wrecks
  • Seven Mile Bridge
The Marathon Hump, often called the West Hump, is a seamount area approximately 27 miles out going SE. There are actually three different seamounts or humps and are out along the edges of the continental shelf. One nice feature of fishing the humps is that you can fish various depth levels in the water column. On top of the mounts, the water will get quite shallow, say maybe 400 to 500 feet deep. Then as you move off of the top, it drops drastically, maybe down to 1100 ft to 1200 ft or more.  The following GPS coordinates or numbers, can be a starting point because it is really an area that you will want to scout and mark fish on your sonar unit or fishfinder.
