USS Mohawk CGC Veterans Memorial Fishing Reef Off Sanibel Florida

There is an exciting new artificial reef off of Sanibel, Florida. The reef is named the USS Mohawk CGC Veterans Memorial Fishing Reef. The sunken vessel was a highly anticipated addition to the various artificial reefs located off of the Southwest Florida coastline in the Gulf of Mexico. Expect to find a wide assortment of reef fish, game fish and marine life once the sunken reef develops an underwater culture.

About:

The USS Mohawk CGC Veterans Memorial Fishing Reef, (WWII Mighty Mo), was sunk on July 2, 2012 and is located approximately 28 miles off the coast of Sanibel Island, FL. The vessel was scuttled in approximately 90 feet of water and rests at the following GPS coordinates of 82°43’42.347″W 26°33’14.64″N. It is a large vessel, so work your way around the wreck and establish your own special coordinates as you fish or dive on the spot.

The artificial reef project is a collaboration between the Lee County Department of Natural Resources and the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA).

Great Fishing and Scuba Diving:

Many fishermen and scuba divers will be checking the underwater structure and expect to find an ongoing spot for many different fish varieties as well as an excellent place to scuba dive within relatively easy access from the Southwest Florida coastline.
